On this day in military history...

• 1941 - British gunboat HMS Ladybird was sunk at Tobruk after being bombed by Luftwaffe aircraft.
• 1943- UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill arrives in Washington DC for the first wartime conference, Trident, between him and US President Roosevelt.  Churchill had travelled secretly across the Atlantic in the RMS Queen Mary.
• 1944 - A two year conflict between the Soviet Union and Germany, the Battle of the Caucasus, ends in Soviet victory.
